F-35 stealth jet, the US’ most advanced fighter, is set for an upgrade with its developer Lockheed Martin bagging a $96.5-million modification contract from the Naval Air Systems Command.

The Maryland-headquartered aerospace giant’s business unit, Aeronautics, clinched the modification contract that is expected to be completed by December 2021.
The single-seat, single-engine, all-weather multirole F-35 stealth is considered the most advanced fighter to date that is designed to perform an array of roles, including both air superiority and strike missions.
The fighter has an impressive armament, advanced avionics, besides electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. The modifications are expected to improve its performance even further.
Under the terms of the contract, Lockheed will offer services associated with aircraft modification efforts for the fighter jet program, which includes reach-back engineering services, support for depots, laser shock peening site support, and material support depot site support.
Reports suggest the majority of the work related to the multi-million dollar deal will be executed in Nagoya, Japan; Fort Worth, Texas, and Cameri, Italy.
