The US is ready for the new bombing campaign in Syria, and will not leave the Middle East region without eliminating all terror groups. This was stated by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo speaking at the American University in Cairo.
“The Trump administration was not inactive when [Syrian President] Bashar a-lAsaad used chemical weapons against his people, and [in response] the president did not once, but twice, bring down the rage of the US military with the support of allies,” Pompeo said.
On December 19, Trump announced the decision to begin the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. He explained that the victory over the Islamic State Islamic terrorist group was achieved in Syria and that the fight against terrorists was the only reason the US military was there.
As stated by US officials, the withdrawal of troops can take from 60 to 100 days. At the same time, the Pentagon stressed that the campaign against the ISIS was not over and that the United States “would continue to work with its partners and allies to defeat the terror group.”
The secretary of state also said that the United States would not leave the Middle East until they achieve complete victory over the terrorists.
“The United States will not leave the Middle East until the terrorists are completely defeated in this region,” he noted. Pompeo added that the American forces would act in the region to eradicate “all terrorist groups.”
Pompeo arrived in Cairo on Wednesday evening as part of a Middle Eastern tour from Iraq, where he made a non-scheduled stop. In the morning he held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
According to the official representative of the head of the republic, the Egyptian leader “stressed the depth of the strategic partnership between the two countries and the importance of continuing coordination and joint consultations on political and security issues in the region.”
