A New Nuclear Missiles Treaty To Replace INF Treaty Between US and Russia

Donald Trump suggested a new nuclear missiles treaty will replace the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force (INF) Treaty. Washingtons new nuclear missile treaty may also incorporate India.

The US President presented arguments in support of his decision to withdraw the USA from the Russsian Intermediate-Range Nuclear Force Treaty. “Perhaps we can negotiate a different agreement, adding China and others, or perhaps we can’t” — in which case, we will outspend and out-innovate all others by far,” Trump said as he gave the speech in the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress.

The Russian backed INF treaty was signed by President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev with an aim to restrict the land-based missiles ranging from 1,000 – 5,000 kilometres.

India’s Prithvi and Agni class missiles are capable of becoming part of the INF treaty. Even Pakistan’s Babur, Shaheen, and Ghauri missiles may fall under this treaty. US President supported his resolution by saying, “Russia repeatedly violated its terms.”

“My Administration is holding constructive talks with a number of Afghan groups, including the Taliban. As we make progress in these negotiations, we will be able to reduce our troop presence and focus on counter-terrorism,” Trump said.

In the context of trade relations with India, Trump said: “If another country places an unfair tariff on an American product, we can charge them the exact same tariff on the same product that they sell to us.”
