The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was passed by the Parliament of India on December 11, 2019. It amended the Citizenship Act of 1955 by providing a path to obtain Indian citizenship to anyone except Muslims, who were facing persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan before December 2014.

Earlier, Javad Zarif tweeted: “Iran condemns the wave of organised violence against Indian Muslims. For centuries, Iran has been a friend of India. We urge Indian authorities to ensure the wellbeing of ALL Indians & not let senseless thuggery prevail. Path forward lies in peaceful dialogue and rule of law.”
The tweet had India summon the Iranian ambassador Ali Chegeni to convey their disregard and also asked Iran to stay out of matters that are internal to India.
