China in Sight, India Successfully Test Fire Agni-V Ballistic Missile

India successfully test-fired its indigenously built, nuclear-capable Agni-V Ballistic Missile on Thursday, 18th January 2018. The envious Agni-V Ballistic Missile (meaning Fire in Sanskrit) was test-fired from Odisha’s Abdul Kalam Island.

The Agni-V surface-to-surface ICBM has a range of over 5,000 km. Confirming the test launch, Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said: “We have successfully launched nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile Agni-V today.”

With the unambiguous determination to boost its nuclear capability, the Indian armed forces are transforming the Agni-V missile missiles to make it competent to transport nuclear warheads. According to sources in the defence ministry, new technologies are included in every launch which includes accurate navigation and guidance system and warhead carrying capability.

Agni-V is a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile developed by India Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Agni V is part of the Agni series of missiles, with a range of 5000-5800 km according to DRDO chief. However Chinese defence experts have been consistently claiming that Indian Agni-V ballistic missile has a range of over 8,000 kilometres, but only shows it as 5000 km’s in-order not to provoke the western world.

Agni-V Ballistic Missile also has advantages of excellent security, longer shelf life, minimal maintenance and greater mobility. India currently possesses a series of Agni Missiles including Agni-1 (700+ km range), Agni-2 (2000+ km range), Agni-3 & Agni-4 (2500 – 3500 km range)
