Bangladesh’s Ambassador Highlights Development in Social Security Sphere

Bangladesh’s Ambassador Masud Bin Momen informed the UN about Bangladesh’s commitment to social protection policy. The Ambassador highlighted the various measures taken by the current Bangladesh government under the social security programmes.

Bangladesh’s ambassador Masud Bin Momen said the government has formulated a comprehensive National Social Security Strategy (NSSS) to incorporate all safety net programmes.

“We are providing regular allowances to 6.5 million elderly men and women, widows, destitute women and persons with disabilities. This is a strategy adopted to alleviate poverty in the country,” Momen said while speaking at the 57th commission for social development held at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The theme of the ongoing 57th Commission for Social Development (CSocD) was  “Social protection as a strategy for addressing inequalities and challenges to social inclusion”.

In his speech, Ambassador emphasised saying, “Immediately after our independence, the then Prime Minister and the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman identified cooperatives as one of the tools to integrate people in the development of the country and rebuild its economy.” He also spoke about Milk Vita- a national leading cooperative in Bangladesh.

The Ambassador called Bangladesh as the role model of women empowerment.  He also added that the government will work for developing the skill to create job opportunities for women. He highlighted the need for resources, institutions, capacity, technology, and commitment to address social exclusion.

Winifred Doherty, NGO Representative supervised the event while Daniela Bas, Director, DESA Division of Inclusive Social Development; Barry Herman, Professor, New School for Social Research, Dr Lovette Ego, Worldwide Network Nigeria; Andrew Allimadi, Coordinator Cooperative Issues, DESA DISD, and Dr Ify Ofong, Worldwide Network Nigeria served as panellist.
