BrahMos Missile: India Officially Signs Deal With The Philippines For The Sale Of Indo-Russian Supersonic Cruise Missiles

India has signed a $375 million contract for the supply of three BrahMos ground-based anti-ship missile systems to the Philippines, the Indian Defence Ministry said on Friday.

“BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) signed a contract with the Department of National Defence of the Republic of Philippines on January 28, 2022 for the supply of Shore Based Anti-Ship Missile System to the Philippines,” the ministry said in a press release.

The ministry said the contract marked an “important step forward” in the implementation of New Delhi’s policy of promoting “responsible defense exports.”

Announcing placing the $375 million order earlier in January, Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that the ground-based BrahMos missiles will go to the Philippine navy. The contract covers three batteries, training for operators and maintainers, as well as an integrated logistical support package, he said.

BrahMos Aerospace is a Russian-Indian enterprise producing supersonic cruise missiles capable of being launched from submarines, ships, planes or land-based platforms. It was established in 1998 and named after the rivers of Brahmaputra and Moscow. The Russian side of the venture is represented by the NPO Mashinostroyenia company.

Earlier in January, India successfully test-launched an advanced ground-based version of its supersonic cruise missile BrahMos with a number of new indigenous systems and improved performance, the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) said on Tuesday.

“BrahMos missile was successfully test-fired from ITR, Chandipur today. The mission validated many new indigenous systems successfully demonstrating enhanced capabilities,” the DRDO tweeted.

India had earlier carried out a successful test-launch of an advanced naval version of the BrahMos missile from the Indian naval ship Visakhapatnam.

In 2018, the Indian Ministry of Defence signed a deal with the company on the rearmament of the Indian air force’s Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters with the BrahMos cruise missile system to build capacity against long-range targets in the Indian Ocean.

“Many of the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fighters will be armed with BrahMos cruise missiles in 2-3 years. These jets are being modernized as planned by the IAF. New launcher for the missiles and support systems are installed on the jets as per the schedule,” Alexander Maksichev, the company’s co-director, told Sputnik.

The new missiles will significantly enhance the IAF’s strategic capacity to eliminate long-range targets in the Indian Ocean, the official added.
