India on Monday successfully tested the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. Indian defence will be greatly bolstered by the induction of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile which was tested in Chandipur district of Odhisa. The success of this test means that the life of the BrahMos missile will now be increased by 2 to 5 years.
Sources informed that the test was conducted extreme conditions of weather and fierce wind speeds. The test was conducted at an integrated test range in the coastal region of Odhisa at around 10 A.M. The range of the BrahMos supersonic missile is 290 km and this range will be covered at supersonic speeds. The cruising speed of the BrahMos supersonic missile is up to the cruising speed of the Mach 3.0. The missile was successfully test fired on May 21 this year. The 21st May test was aimed at the extension of life for the Brahmos missile.
The BrahMos Missile
BrahMos missiles are built under a joint programme between India and Russia. It derives its name from river Brahmaputra in India and Moskva in Russia. It is a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India and NPOM of Russia. The BrahMos missile is highly versatile in its operations and capabilities and it has been operationalised in the Indian Army, Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force.
The BrahMos adds a great dimension to India’s defence given its immaculate land attack capabilities, anti-ship capabilities and multi-role abilities spreading across multiple platforms. It is a great force multiplier for India’s potentials in the modern-day advanced warfare and certainly poses a threat to India’s enemies.
The advanced versions of the missile will be capable of vertical launches to be used in mountainous regions and to attack aircraft carriers. As per source, these versions would be inducted soon.
