The reorganisation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir by the Indian government has triggered a chain of international reactions. After Pakistan threatened India with severe consequences, now China which has expressed an aggressive dissent to the proposed Union Territory status for Ladakh. As quoted by Hindustan Times, China called India’s decisions pertaining to Ladakh as being ‘unacceptable.’
China’s strong response comes after UN urges India-Pakistan to maintain peace
China strongly condemned the decisions taken by New Delhi and warned India against any unilateral decisions in the context of Jammu and Kashmir. China is particularly irked at the bifurcation of the state into two union territories i.e. Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
China also expressed concerns about the deployment of additional troops in Jammu and Kashmir and reiterated that China’s position on Kashmir is consistent and clear.
China’s response to the new scenario was keenly anticipated given the fact that China happens to be an all-weather friend of Pakistan and also a part of the Kashmir dispute. The fact that Aksai Chin (China occupied Kashmir) lies in Ladakh is a reason why China becomes a party to the dispute.
Before China’s reactions came on Tuesday, the United Nations and the US urged both India and Pakistan to maintain peace and stability across the Line of Control.
India calls it an ‘internal matter’
India was swift to respond to Chinese disagreement on the recent developments in Jammu and Kashmir. India maintains that Kashmir is a strictly an internal matter concerning the territory if India and also reminded China of the fact that both nations have agreed to maintain peace along their disputed border.
Now how this chain of events will affect India-China relations is something that remains to be seen in the due course of international affairs.
