The official said, “Now we have told China that if you come close to us, we will shoot. The soldiers have also been given the right to shoot in self-defence.”

Warning shots have been fired on various instances on the north and south banks of Pangong Tso in eastern Ladakh and the Chinese have been given a clear message that pushing back Indian soldiers physically will not work any more, The Hindu quoted a senior government official.

Stating that once a scuffle breaks-out, like the Galwan Valley clash, opening the fire was not possible, the official pointed out, “Now, we said, if you come close we will fire. Distance is dependent on the conditions like day or night, location and so on… If they are about to be overrun or in self-defence, troops are authorised to fire.”

Earlier, New Delhi said it was vital to avoid altering the status quo in border areas while India and China continue their negotiations to achieve complete disengagement at all friction points and to ensure full restoration of peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control.
