The Special Forces of Turkmenistan began a joint combat training exercise with the Indian Army at Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, on Thursday. The Indian Army will train them in ‘Combat Free Fall’ as a precursor to a series of customized courses.

The Combat Free Fall parachute system provides paratroopers with total solutions for jumping from a height of 30,000 ft, gliding up to a 30km range, and landing at the desired target. The system is used on High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) modes.

The Indian Army had received the request for the training from the Turkmenistan Special Forces, India’s Defense Ministry said in a statement.

It said the training will help the paratroopers to enhance their capabilities. Sharing the details of the training on Twitter, the Indian Army called the exercise “building bonds of friendship”.

A group of 16 Special Forces personnel from India and Turkmenistan had undergone training for the first phase of skydiving at the Indian Army’s Special Forces Training School at Nahan, Himachal Pradesh, in early February.

As part of joint training exercises, a team of the Indian Army’s Special Forces will be visiting Ashgabat in August. They will later participate in Turkmenistan’s 30th year of independence celebrations to be held on September 27.

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to visit Turkmenistan after a gap of two decades. The two sides had then signed a ‘Defense Cooperation Agreement’. The agreement underscored the growing importance of Turkmenistan and the Central Asian region for India’s security-strategic calculus.

In 2018, Turkmenistan Defense Minister Colonel General Yaylym Berdiev had met with his Indian counterpart Manohar Parrikar during his visit to New Delhi and emphasized intensifying bilateral defense and security cooperation through exchanges of visits of high and mid-level officials and training, among others.

The two countries virtually participated in the fourth round of Foreign Office Consultations in January 2021. They reviewed the various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, economic, commercials, defense, scientific, cultural, education, and consular cooperation.
