In a big leap towards bolstering defence capabilities, India cleared multiple defence projects worth INR 46,000 crores, including 111 Helicopters for the Indian Navy. The Defence Acquisition Council chaired by India’s Defence Minister cleared big projects in the pipeline. These projects includes helicopters for the Indian Navy and artillery guns for the Indian Army.

Helicopters For Supplying Troops and Ammunition During War

A project of 111 helicopters for the Indian Navy was at a cost of over INR 21000 crores was approved by the Defence Acquisition Council. These helicopters will hold the key for Indian Navy’s operations of ferrying troops and supplies to the ground forces.

This is the first project helmed by the Ministry of Defence’ Strategic Partnership Model which is meant to boost the indigenous manufacturing of major defence equipment. This model has been envisaged as an engine to propel India to being a defence manufacturing hub in collaboration with foreign manufacturers.

Indian Navy To Get Anti Submarine Helicopters

The council also approved the procurement of 24 multi-role helicopters with anti-submarine capabilities. These will be an integral part of warships and aircraft carriers of the Indian Navy.

In a statement, the Defence Ministry said that these helicopters will bridge the prevalent capabilities gap. These helicopters will fly ahead of warships while carrying out anti-submarine operations and their SONAR will search depths to identify enemy targets. They would then launch torpedos and depth charges to clear the way for the feet of the warships. The Indian Navy currently has two depleting fleets of such helicopters.

Advanced Artillery Guns For Indian Army

The proposal for advanced tow artillery guns amounting to INR 24,879 crores was also approved by the Defence Council. The Indian Army will procure 150 indigenous designed 155 mm Advanced Towed Artillery Guns. These artillery guns have been designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. These will now be manufactured by agencies nominated by the DRDO.
