Indian Diaspora Largest In the World In 2019: UN Report

According to a new report published by the United Nations, India is the leading country of origin of international migrants in 2019. The Indian diaspora in foreign nations stands at 17.5 million while the total number of global migrants is 272 million.

The International Migrant Stock data has been compiled by the Population Division of United Nations’ Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) The dataset has the latest estimates regarding the number of international immigrants from the virtue of gender, origin and age.

The leading 10 nations in these estimates by DESA make up for one-third of the total global migrant population. These numbers are based on official national statistics of foreign population obtained from national surveys and population consensus.

Following India, Mexico is at the second spot on the UN list followed by China, Russia and Syria. Mexico accounted for 11.8 million international migrants while China was the country of origin for 10.7 million international migrants.

India was the home to around 5.1 million international migrants in 2019 as per the latest UN report in contrast to 5.2 million international migrants last year. The report also states that India hosted 207,000 as a share of the total international migrants in India.

As per the latest estimates, the maximum number of international migrants came from Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Regionally it was Europe which hosted the maximum number of international migrants followed by Northern America and Northern Africa. Europe saw an influx of 82 million international immigrants in 2019.
