Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif Resignation Linked To Bashar Al-Assad: Experts

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced his resignation on Instagram. The unexpected resignation of Javad Zarif is linked to the 2015 Nuclear deal, says media reports. But is there any other reason why Javad Zarif resigned?

Will Iran Also Walk Out Of the Iran Nuclear Deal After The US Pulled Back?

Recently, rumours about Mohammad Javad Zarif’s likely resignation really intensified. Many critics accused cabinet of President of the Islamic Republic, Hassan Rouhani and the widening “gaps” in the foreign policy especially the failure of the nuclear deal with the west as the main reason.

The other possible reason could be the ambiguous position of the leading European countries who on the one hand supported Iran with the nuclear deal, but on the other hand, continued to accuse Tehran of continuing its own missile program and “aggressive behavior” in the Middle East.

According to media reports, a “diplomatic incident” within the Iranian leadership was the key reason for the resignation of Zarif. It is believed that Zarif was not informed about the visit of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad to Tehran which took place on February 25. As a result, the Foreign Minister was allegedly “offended” and immediately announced his resignation from the post of Foreign Minister.

59-year-old Zarif brought this news to the public in a rather exotic way by posting a resignation message on his Instagram page. In the message, the minister expressed regret for all the mistakes he made in this post, thanked the Iranian nation and its leadership, and apologized for the “further inability to continue service.”

The United States said it studied reports of the resignation of the head of the Iranian foreign office. At the same time, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo noted, “our policy remains unchanged – the (Iranian) regime should behave like a normal country and respect (its) people.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the resignation of Zarif. Meanwhile, his immediate superior, president and head of the government, Hassan Rouhani, has not commented on the situation at all and has not made a statement about accepting or rejecting Zarif’s petition.

According to the Al-Jazeera television channel on Tuesday morning, the head of the Rouhani’s office “strongly denied” rumors in the media about the resignation of Zarif from the post of Foreign Minister.
