Fire In Mumbai’s Kamala Mills, 14 Dead, 23 Severely Injured

The Kamala Mills Compound situated in India’s financial capital Mumbai in Lower Parel area was engulfed in fire. At least 14 people are reported to be dead and 23 severely injured in the Kamala Mills fire out of which two are critical, according to the officials. 

The blaze was reported around 12.30 a.m. from a bistro The Mojo, a rooftop restaurant in the Kamala Trade House, in Lower Parel area of south Mumbai. Casualties include guests from a birthday party along with other party-goers. The firemen were able to rescue 10 people safely, however, the majority of the victims were reported to be dead on the spot.

Dr.Rajesh Dere, the doctor who performed the postmortems on the bodies said, Postmortem reveals that all the 14 deaths were due to suffocation.” Rescue operations are currently being carried out at the building. The fire broke out on the third floor of the four-storeyed building situated on Senapati Bapat Marg, a commercial hub of the city. The injured were taken to the KEM, Bhatia Hospital, Airoli Burns Hospital, and Sion hospital

Cause of Kamala Mills Blaze? 

The place witnessed several fire tenders, water tankers, emergency ambulance and police teams of the rescue operation at the earliest, he said. Police have registered an FIR against the restaurant owner where the fire initiated in Mumbai’s Lower Parel locality.

Mumbai Police have booked the owner of the pub for negligence, culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The cause of the Fire Blaze is suspected to be due to an electric short-circuit.

Transmission of the TV channels ET Now, Mirror Now, Zoom & TV9 Marathi were affected due to the fire breakout.The building, in Central Mumbai, houses some the commercial establishments including hotels.

Prime Minister Condolences the Tragic Incident

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing sadness over the unfortunate incident. In a tweet, the Indian PM said “Anguished by the fire in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. I pray that those injured recover quickly.”
