The United States “disqualified” itself from the Middle East Peace Process after the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This was stated by Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas during a joint press conference in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron.
“From now on, the United States is no longer an honest broker in the Middle East Peace Process. We will not accept any plan (Palestinian-Israeli Settlement) put forward by the United States, “the Palestinian leader said. Abbas also condemned the threats of the American side to the UN member states to end financial assistance to Washington’s “partners” and contributions to the United Nations funds.
“The General Assembly reaffirms that any measures and actions aimed at changing the nature, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem are null and void, and should be repealed in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. The UN General Assembly called on states not to open diplomatic missions in Jerusalem and facilitate the Middle East Peace Process.
A few hours before the opening of the emergency session of the General Assembly, the United States permanent representative to the UN, Nikki Hailey, warned her colleagues in the Organization with an official letter stating that President Trump “will closely follow” the vote on the status of Jerusalem. In the letter, Haley recalled that the United States has repeatedly provided assistance to its partners and now Washington expects that they will sympathize with the actions of the US administration on the status of Jerusalem.
“Please take into account the long-standing friendly relations, as well as the support that we provided. The President asked me to tell him which countries will vote against us,” said the American permanent representative, noting that Washington will “take note of every vote.”
Middle East Peace Process: Netanyahu Slams United Nations
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the UN “the house of lies” and “the theater of absurdity”, categorically refusing to recognize the results of voting on the UN General Assembly resolution on the status of Jerusalem.
“Israel completely rejects this ridiculous decision. Jerusalem is our capital. So it was, and it will always be so. But I appreciate the fact that an increasing number of countries refuse to participate in this theater of absurdity. And especially, once again I want to express my gratitude to the US President Donald Trump and Ambassador Nikki Haley for defending Israel and defending the truth, added Netanyahu.
The Palestinian leadership, on the contrary, announced a decision that will contribute to a resolution of Middle East Peace Process. “This is an important day for the world, the day when the international community rejected the absurd Israeli claim to Jerusalem.
The White House said that the document adopted in the United Nations would not affect Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Israel as the capital of a Jewish state but definitely would affect Washington’s attitude to the world organization.
