Modi’s “Secret Nuclear Ship” Under Make in India Program Almost Ready

Indian defence is bracing to have its own nuclear missile tracking ship built under the Make In India Initiative as a part of the vision seen by PM Narendra Modi. Given the India-Pakistan and India-China rivalry, India is developing an elaborate missile shield programme against attacks. India’s own nuclear missile tracking ship known as VC11184 is undergoing successful harbour trials and likely to be commissioned by December 2018.

The VC11184 is being built for the National Talent Research Organisation (NTRO) and is a specialised ocean surveillance ship. It was ordered 4 years ago by the Indian Government under PM Modi’s vision to focus more on creating a nuclear missile shield for the nation.

In the next step, the Indian Navy and the National Talent Research Organisation will undertake sea trials jointly. The specialised surveillance systems of the ships including three dome-shaped antennas packed with sensors will be extensively tested in the next series of trials. The basin trials are done with and they were successful as stated by the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Rear Admiral LV Sarath Babu.

The VC11184 is yet to receive a formal commissioning name. The project will be completed at a cost of INR 725 crore has been executed with high secrecy on details including the capabilities of the onboard systems. It is one of the largest warships to be built at an Indian shipyard and it was initially built in a covered dry dock to keep spying agents away. Now the ship has been docked at the yard and can be seen from the Vizag channel.

The keel of the stealth vessel was laid in 2014 and it is expected to be completed in less than five years. It will set a new standard for building complex vessels on time as stated by the Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Rear Admiral LV Sarath Babu.
