Pakistan Calls For Restraint and Re-Engagement After Talks Between US and Taliban Collapse

Pakistan’s foreign ministry has called upon for a re-engagement between the US and Taliban saying that there is no military solution to the Afghanistan conflict. This statement came from Pakistan’s foreign ministry after being apprised about the cancellation of meeting between Donald Trump and representatives from the Taliban and Afghanistan.

The meeting for deciding the withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan was supposed to be held at Camp David after rounds of negotiations.

Pakistan Calls For Restraint

Pakistan also condemned violence and asked all sides to maintain restraint and avert any escalation. The Pakistan Army in its statement said that Islamabad will perpetually monitor the situation in Afghanistan and will reiterate its stand that a military solution cannot be a solution to the long going Afghanistan war.

Pakistan stated that the conflict should end with a political solution on the lines of the one which was being worked on between the US and Taliban.

The spokesman of the ministry further added that Pakistan has been facilitating the peace and reconciliation process in good faith and will continue to do so as a part of shared responsibility towards maintaining peace in Afghanistan.

Donald Trump was to hold talks with representatives of the Taliban and Afghanistan government separately but he chose to cancel the meeting. This cancellation now puts a big question mark on the scope of reconciliation between sides to finally pave way for the withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan’s soil after almost two decades.

The cancellation of talks from Trump came after the Taliban claimed responsibility of a blast in Kabul that claimed 12 lives including a US soldier.
