At the beginning of this year, India and Pakistan exchanged lists of the prisoners who belong to other countries serving in their jails. There are 249 Pakistani prisoners and 98 fishermen in India’s jail while Pakistan has 54 Indian prisoners apart from 483 fishermen.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs informed that 396 Indians kept in Pakistani jails have already served punishment. It is still not clear whether these prisoners will receive consular access or not.  India-Pakistan exchanges prisoners list every year, as part of the agreement signed in 2008.

In the past, both India and Pakistan cleared each other’s unresolved diplomatic and official visas. Recently, Pakistan released Indian citizen Hamid Ansari who was detained for keeping a fake passport.
