Pakistan To Use UN Report on HR Violation in Kashmir at UNGA Sidelines

Pakistan will use UN report on Kashmir to highlight human rights violation in the region at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) sidelines. While India has rejected the report, Pakistan seems to be taking advantage of the fact as it has long wanted to seize Kashmir.

The issue will be brought into light during a conference that will be held on the margins of the UNGA, foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said.

“At the UN, there will be a separate conference on Kashmir on the sidelines. It happens every year, but it is different this time because a new UN report has come out which sheds light on (Jammu and Kashmir),” Qureshi said.

There has been a rise in the people’s interest in human rights abuses taking place in Kashmir, he said during a news conference that he addressed along with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday.

The UN report on the human rights situation in Kashmir, released in June, triggered a rage as it called for discussing past and ongoing rights violations in the region.

India’s foreign ministry refused the report, the first published by the UN on the human rights situation in both parts of Kashmir, saying it was “fallacious, tendentious and motivated” and said it is a “largely unverified information”.

The foreign minister of Turkey said will support Pakistan in the group formed on Kashmir at the UN and will the back the attempts for a peaceful solution to the long-standing Kashmir problem. He said it is Turkey’s ambition that the Kashmir issue is settled in a peaceful way.
