Rohingya Muslims in India – Migrants, Infiltrators or Criminals?

Rohingya Muslims in India are under the hammer again as the Modi Government begin a crackdown on the Migrant community. The Ministry for Home Affairs has issued an advisory to states asking them to identify and collect biometric data of the Rohingya Muslim Refugees in India. The Ministry also informed the lower house of the Parliament that Rohingya Muslims in India have been involved in illegal activities.

As reported by The Hindu, the government also explained to the Parliament that Rohingya Muslims living in India are not refugees but illegal migrants. Rajanth Singh, the Minister for Home Affairs also said in the Parliament that the Border Security Forces and other armed forces to not allow any more immigrants into the Indian side of the border.

Following a systematic violence instigated by the Myanmar army in the Rakhine State, Rohingya Muslims fled Myanmar in large numbers. The Rohingya refugee crisis has been cited as one of the biggest refugee crisis by the UN and Myanmar was at the receiving end of global criticism for its actions.

The United Nations also termed the Rohingya Refugee Crisis as being a typical example of an act of ethnic cleansing. Muslims constituted a small population of the residents of Myanmar which were only restricted to the Rakhine state.

The Ministry for Home Affairs further informed the Parliament that there were about 40000 Rohingya Muslims living in India. These Rohingyas have been mostly living in Jammu & Kashmir, Tripura, Hyderabad and parts of Haryana.

The Ministry informed that these Rohingyas have been involved in illegal activities however the nature of these activities was not disclosed. The ministry said that even though India is not a signatory to the UN Convention on refugees, India’s approach towards refugees including the Rohingya Muslims has been mostly soft. The minister further said that this soft approach, however, should not mean that India refuses to have regulations in its systems.
