Russia-Hungary Relations Set To Boost with Massive Purchase of Russian Gas

Russia-Hungary relations are set to become stronger. Hungary plans to purchase over 4 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia in 2020, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said following the talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday, according to Tass.

The relations between both countries were damaged in 1956 due to the Soviet intervention in the revolution occurring in Hungary. However, both countries re-established diplomatic relations after the breakup of the USSR.

Since 1991, Hungarian-Russian relations have improved constantly. Following the Russian military intervention in Ukraine in 2014, Prime Minister Viktor Orban rejected the Russian sanctions despite European Union pressure.
