US, UN Urge India-Pakistan To Maintain Peace Over Flaring Kashmir Dispute

After the government of India scrapped the special constitutional status of Kashmir on Monday, the international community has expressed its concern over the situation in Kashmir. After the repealing of Article 370 and Article 35 A, the United Nations along with the United States has urged all stakeholders of the Kashmir dispute to maintain peace.

Pakistan Fears Genocide In Kashmir After India Revokes Article 370

The US said that is keenly and closely observing the events unfolding in Jammu and Kashmir and wants both India and Pakistan to preserve stability and peace across the Line of Control. The US at the same time has also acknowledged the decision made by the government of India as strictly an internal matter.

Pakistan vows to exercise all possible options

The scrapping of constitutional provisions (Article 370) in Kashmir has sent tremors across Pakistan. An irked and flabbergasted Pakistan has not only condemned these developments but has also vehemently opposed them. Pakistan further went on to state that it will not shy away from using all possible options to challenge the unilateral decisions made by India on Monday.

P5 Envoys briefed on the status

The Ministry of External Affairs, India has also briefed the envoys of the P5 nations about India’s decision to change the constitutional position of Kashmir. The envoys of the US, the UK, China, France and Russia were informed about the need to scrap Article 370 and to divide the state into two union territories.

The US expressed concerns over human rights violation

Despite calling it an internal matter for India, the US State Department Spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus pointed towards the reports of human rights violation in Kashmir. She said that the US is concerned about detentions and calls on for respect of individuals and affected communities.

Pakistan Fears Genocide?

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday said there was a threat of genocide and ethnic cleansing in Jammu and Kashmir after India revoked Article 370.

Qureshi said Pakistan would request and appeal to the United Nations, OIC, friendly countries and human rights organisations not to remain silent on this issue.

According to Qureshi, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was more serious than before. “We will consult our legal experts and I believe the freedom movement in Kashmir will gain momentum,” he added.
