Economically Drained Pakistan Engaged in Back-Channel Diplomacy With India

India and Pakistan are quietly engaged in “back-channel diplomacy” to restore bilateral relations. Recently, Delhi cancelled a scheduled meeting of India, Pakistan foreign ministers on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) citing provocative actions by Islamabad with a clear intent to disrupt ties.

Indian High Commissioner for Pakistan Ajay Absaria told media that engagements between two countries would take place away from the glare of TV cameras and the media for the time being. He expressed optimism about the resumption of dialogue and added that Pakistan and India will have to come to talks ultimately, but for that, a conducive atmosphere has to be created first.

Absaria said that the media had been ‘too inquisitive’ about any progress in the relations of the two countries. It could harm the progress. This time “we will take the media into confidence when something tangible will be on table.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is seeking US role in facilitating talks between India and Pakistan because the two neighbouring countries are not engaging bilaterally, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said, warning that inadequacy of such a facilitation could lead to an escalation of tension.

But the latest Pakistani request in this regard has again been rejected by the US, the top Pakistani diplomat said a day after he had meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton.
