Pakistan has asked the Indian government to assure reliable security to all prisoners held in Indian jails. Pakistan expressed concern over the Pakistani prisoner, Shakir Ullah’s death in the Jaipur Central Jail which many experts fear is linked to Pulwama Attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan expressed concern and sought a response from India on media reports quoting prison officials saying,” the Pakistani prisoner, Shakir Ullah, was found dead in his cell”. Shakir Ullah was serving life imprisonment after his conviction in a terror-related case.
The killing in Jaipur prison comes amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan after the Pulwama terror attack. According to Jaipur police, Shakrullah, a Pakistani national belonging to the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who was lodged in the Jaipur Central Jail, was allegedly killed in a brawl with other prisoners.
Over 350 Pakistanis are held in different jails of India as per a list compiled this year. Pakistan has sought a response from India on the killing of Shakir Ullah. In a statement, the Foreign Office said: “the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has officially raised the issue with Indian authorities, requesting them to urgently authenticate the report and awaits a response”.
“We call upon the Indian government to fulfil its obligations and ensure the provision of foolproof security to all Pakistani inmates/prisoners in Indian jails and Pakistani visitors to India,” said the statement released by Pakistan’s Foreign Office.
“The matter will be investigated by a judicial magistrate and also by the police,” said Rajasthan Director General of Police Kapil Garg.
