Trump Rejects Modi’s Invite For Republic Day Celebrations

PM Modi was hoping to have Donald Trump for the Republic Day celebrations as the Guest of Honor, however, the invite has been politely not accepted. India has a tradition of inviting key leaders on its Republic Day celebrations and PM Modi was keen to Donald Trump by his side this time, giving burgeoning India-US Relations.

The letter by the US state department is said to have comprised a regret message from President Trump. The US president’s domestic commitments, notably his State of the Union (SOTU) address, around that time of the year are possibly the reason for Trump not accepting Modi’s invite.

Trump is known to have a direct, on-face approach, unlike his predecessor Barack Obama who, under similar conditions in 2015, agreed to visit India as Republic Day chief guest.

Earlier, as EurAsian Times reported, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has invited Trump to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations next year. “President Trump does look forward to visiting India again to reflect on what has been an amazingly positive trajectory in our relationship,” Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asia Region Alice Wells told PTI here in response to a question on when would the US president be able to make a visit to India.
